How ‘Book Club’ Challenges Aging Tropes With Its Iconic Cast

It’s fantastic to see more possibilities for actors who came up at the tail end of Hollywood’s Golden Age in a youth-obsessed industry. Book Club 2: The Next Chapter follows Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen as they fly to Italy for the fun girls trip their characters never had. It’s worth noting that the characters in the Book Club movies do not fit the foolish grandma archetype that is sometimes assigned to older actors. Instead, these roles allow these actors to talk about the changes that have occurred not only in their careers but also in their bodies.

According to a new AFI study, women made up a higher share of writers, directors, and producers during Hollywood’s silent era.

The study comes at a time when recent data indicates that Hollywood has fewer female creators and directors behind some of its most popular films.

The AFI research, “Women They Talk About,” chronicles the unrecorded contributions of female filmmakers during the silent film era and unearths the genuine narrative of women as pioneers in American cinema.

Michelle Yeoh: “We Can Tell Our Own Stories on Our Own Terms”

Michelle Yeoh won an award and made history at the National Board of Review dinner last night. The actress won Best Actress for her performance in “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once,” a sci-fi comedy about a Chinese American woman forced to deal with the aftermath of an interdimensional rupture. ” I am so incredibly proud to be the first Asian actress in 45 years to receive this honor”, Yeoh remarked at the ceremony, according to Indiewire.

Yeoh called the opportunity to play Evelyn Wang in “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once” a “gift.” ” I hope that Hollywood and the filmmaking community recognize what a watershed film this is and [that it represents] all the things I’ve stood for and tried to accomplish in my four-decade career. This award proves we can tell our own stories on our own terms and embrace something as simple and as important as our given names.”

Long monologues are used in films ranging from the biographical “Till” to the thriller “Resurrection” to allow female characters a chance to be heard.

It’s not every day that a film is produced that is entirely comprised of monologues, as is the case with Frederick Wiseman’s recent drama “A Couple,” which focuses on Sophia Tolstaya and her difficult marriage to Leo Tolstoy. That wasn’t the only 2022 film that used a speech in an unexpected way. In August, the strange psychological thriller “Resurrection” contained one that was longer than any in “A Couple” and most likely the longest shown all year. In “Till,” which depicts Emmett Till’s gruesome 1955 murder, a critical courtroom shot of Emmett’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, on the stand is kept for more than six minutes, every second packed with anguish.
